Medical Office Administrator: A Career with a Future

When you're young with your whole life ahead of you, there's nothing more frustrating than finding yourself with a dull, low-paying job that offers little in the way of rewards of opportunities for advancement.

If this sounds like your situation, maybe you should consider a career as a medical office administrator.

Why a medical office administrator? Here are five compelling reasons:

1) Health Care Is a Growing Field. Health care services accounted for 11.7 percent of Canada's 2010 Gross Domestic Product (GDP), making it the third largest sector of the country's economy.* This percentage is only expected to increase as our population ages and demands require additional health care services.

2) You Will Have Important Responsibilities. Although specific duties vary from office to office, medical office administrators often handle such important responsibilities as managing patient records, completing and submitting medical claim forms, scheduling appointments and maintaining an inventory of medical and office supplies.

3) You Will Work in a Professional Environment. As a medical office administrator, you will work shoulder to shoulder with doctors, nurses and other trained professionals. Hours tend to be regular, the work relatively low-pressure, and the working conditions clean and orderly.

4) There Should Be Room for Growth. When you start your career, your responsibilities are likely to be limited. But as you get more experience, you will likely have many chances to take on more work and increase your value to your employer.

5) Your Skills Will Be Portable. Medical office administration is a skill set you can take anywhere in Canada. Health care offices are everywhere, and even if you move, there is a good chance you will find a need for your services.

What Does a Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician Do?

Medical laboratories play a key role in the health care field. While doctors may make a preliminary diagnosis based on a patient's observable symptoms (or lack thereof), only a medical laboratory can say for sure if a person is healthy or not, and what his/her condition actually is. The medical lab does this by scientifically analyzing biological samples such as blood, urine, hair, skin or organ tissue to look for telltale signs of illness at the microscopic level.

While most high-level analysis is performed by trained scientific professionals, labs often employ medical laboratory assistants or technicians to perform much of their critical support work. What kind of work do medical laboratory assistants and technicians do? Here are some examples:

Collecting blood or tissue samples from patientsUsing a microscope or automatic analyzer to perform basic tests on blood and urine samplesTesting for blood type and blood countsSetting up, calibrating and maintaining laboratory equipmentPreparing chemical reagents for use in advanced medical testsAnalyzing data and recording data either electronically or on paper charts

Working as a medical laboratory assistant or technician requires significant education as well as the correct temperament. A good medical laboratory assistant or technician needs to be disciplined, organized, focused and able to communicate clearly with other people. Other people's lives can literally depend on how well they perform their jobs.
